Visit to the Moon (or At Least its Craters)

We went with gazilions of other people on a hike/bike through Craters of the Moon National Monument. The loop around the park is only about 3 miles, so many biked, and some drove, and we stopped frequently and hiked to things like caves, etc.

Adam and Jack took their bikes.

When the officials saw the size of our group, and the number of bikes, they came to pester us about a group permit. But eventually, they settled for giving us a lecture about safety, and let us go.

Sam showing how studly he is be beating everyone up the first cinder cone.

Atop the first hill, looking off to the South.

Looking Northeast.

Only one (live) tree up there.

Adam and his buddy Calvin.

A few of the group descending that first hill.

All those bikes are from our group.

Jann, emerging from the rubble at Broken Top.

Down in the cave at Broken Top.

On the trail to Indian Cave.

Indian Cave is a collapsed lava tube, that was, perhaps 20 feet tall at the highest.

Also Indian Cave.

Adam peed his pants. (Or spilled his water.)

Broken lava bubble.

Sam descending into Boy Scout Cave.

Calling it a day, and heading for a picnic supper.

Bee Happy (Don't Worry)

Grandpa got a new slug of bees to add to his hive that had wintered over from last year. Adam helped.

Grandpa getting suited up. Bees are in the wooden crate.

Adam ready for anything the bees can dish out.

Cracking open the hive.

Removing some frames...

... to be replaced by new ones.

Shaking the new bees out, and into the hive.

The queen is in the little wooden container Grandpa is holding.

Putting things back together.

Thanks for the help Adam.

Jack riding out back.

Grandpa riding in the driveway. Showing Laura how easy it is.

Trying to convince Laura that is really is easy.

Off she goes. Big girl.

Grandma looking beautiful.

Jack's First Loss (This Year)

Jack's little soccer team was undefeated (save one game) last year. The best they can do this year is the same. They've got some good little players this year, and in addition, Jack has figured out how to score. He's pretty slick in getting past defenders, and says to me that the key to scoring is to kick the ball where the goalie isn't.

Last game, Jack got a hat trick in about 10 minutes at the start of the game, and scored a fourth goal later. After that, they put him on defense. But Saturday's game they met the other undefeated team, and were outmaneuvered. They made lots of shots on goal (maybe seven or eight) in the last quarter, but for some reason made every one directly at the goalie. So they lost 3 zip.

Watering up before the game.

Notice his impeccable technique while throwing the ball in.

Here, he's broken free, and actually would have scored, but the goalie charged him so aggressively that they collided. It took a minute or two for the goalie to shake it off afterward.

The coach is nice, but his son knows how to play.

If they're making faces, they're taking it seriously?

Stink Bug

We went down to Rachel Cox's wedding in Bountiful, and then stayed the night with the O'Connors. We got to see the stink bug in action.

She's quite an eater.

Yucky kisses Dad.
